PREVIEW: NYC based artist/sculptor Mitchell Cooper casts Kasia Struss of Women Management

We have a great sneak peek for you fashion, art and beauty lovers!
This is something we think is very cool, and honestly something of a throw back. A throw back to a long time ago when a muse inspired the creation of a Sculpture! Soho based Mitchell Cooper takes us there with his unique inspirations. We chatted with the artist a bit to see what started this amazing project
(images after the interview)
What drew you to this project?:
I had just moved to New York and was working in finance, when I fist started making little drawings in my cubicle. I figured if I wanted to make a better looking drawing, then it couldn’t hurt to make the subject of the drawing itself more appealing and I later carried the same theme on with my sculptures. My first pieces were very crude and abstract, and eventually I began taking molds directly from my subjects and finishing them off with a modern Romanesque style.

Why did you choose this model?:
The latest piece I did is of Kasia Struss, from Women Management. She is friends with my neighbor, Yuliana B. from IMG Model Management, of whom I took the mold for my first full body piece. I have a few more pieces to make before my show, but now it seems like all the girls from IMG and Women want me to make a sculpture of them, so now I have the luxury of being able to pick and choose who to do next. It’s exciting!

What can you tell us about the process of the casting/moulding?:
It is a unique process that I have created, which involves brushing silicone directly on the model from neck to toes.  I then take a mold of the head and hands in a different material. The tricky part if fitting the front half together with the back half and making everything flow. The next step is sculpting on the hair in clay and recasting it into fiberglass. The hair can sometimes drive you nuts.

What is next for you and/or for this project?:
I taught myself everything, and I learn a lot from my mistakes. I am always thinking about the process and how to make things look better and go quicker. The first two pieces each took a few months to get together, but I’m thinking I can get it down to about four weeks or so, especially if I can get a few helpers.
Well, I have a few more pieces to make before my show, so I don’t have an exact date of the opening yet.  But what will happen in the next few months is that each piece will eventually be cast in aluminum and painted a solid color; but they will be very similar to how they look now. After that I am going to do some life-sized porcelain pieces of some of the girls, but this time they will be painted and have clothes on.  So look out for that.

Mike Vensel - New York Fashion Week S/S 2012

Mike Vensel recently showed his collection at New York Fashion Week with his Spring/Summer 2012 line. We picked out some of our favorite looks and some info. on the collection!

"For Spring Summer 2012 Mike Vensel explores the intersection of the Egyptian goddess Isis and the architect I.M Pei. Egyptian culture, which includes architectural and geometric elements, have all been deconstructed into multiple themes that run throughout the collection, and some unexpected elements that span the most primitive origins of African culture to the most modern architectural themes found in the light, airy work of I.M. Pei. Light winged and caped silhouettes are joined by body-conscious and tunic styles. Simple pyramid shaped details can be found throughout the collection with touches of leather and fur in reference to the worship of majestic animals found in the region. A modern, minimalist take on one of the most ancient traditional cultures and ways of dressing proves that 3000 years into the future many of the same ideas of construction and simplicity can sill be explored in a collection that is both relevant but also timeless".

Daria returns from NYC

Fresh on the scene is the local Daria! The bright eyed, statuesque beauty just returned from a great first show season in New York Fashion Week walking for Libertine amongst several others.  After returning to Ottawa Daria took some time to answer a few questions for us about her recent experience in New York and a couple tips for travelers or new models going to New York for the first time.

Name:
Daria Ponomareva

Mother agency:
Angies Models and Talent

How long is your contract?

5 years

What could you tell us about the market for new models/models whom have not yet been?

The market is very good in New York because it needs everything. Not just commercial and not just high fashion so everyone gets a chance.

What is something interesting/different about the city?

As they say.. "the city that never sleeps"
And that is true. New Yorkers are out at all hours of the day. Castings sometimes happen at 11pm. It's much busier with a lot more people around especially tourists. New York also has several opportunities for new models.

What is the shopping like?

Shopping in NYC is amazing. You can find stores for absolutely anything you want to buy and with different prices everywhere.

Any current fashion trends that stand out/ different that you have noticed?

I have noticed a lot of models wear transparent white/black blouses that you can get from American Apparel, and long light skirts. Some dress classier with jackets from Zara and shoes from Zara.

Make-up trends that you have noticed?

A lot of the things I did notice involved natural makeup so I think that is what is "in" at the moment.

Favorite thing about working in this market?

My favorite thing about working in this market is that I get a chance to try everything and it is basically a whole new experience.

Something you'd recommend to eat for somebody who has never been?

I recommend drinking "Neuro" drinks and eating lots of healthy stuff :)

Artist Spotlight: AMY SHACKLETON

Amy Shackleton is a visual artist based in Toronto, Canada making one hell of a name for herself!
Her paintings are captivating landscapes colliding together ever so gently. We chatted with Amy a week prior to her next solo show in Toronto.

Name:
Amy Shackleton

Currently represented at which galleries?:
The Elaine Fleck Gallery (Toronto), Gerry Thomas Gallery (Calgary), Degree Art Gallery (London, England).

Favorite thing about your job?:
I'm able to paint, travel and be creative everyday. What more can an artist ask for?

Least favorite thing about your job?:

Ironically, writing about my work. I have a hard time organizing my thoughts in a linear fashion. Besides, a picture is worth a thousand words, right?

Advice to anybody thinking about stepping into the visual arts world?:
You need to love it, want it and live for it everyday. Don't be afraid of rejection, because it will happen time and time again. Make time for your art, and I'm not talking about just an hour or two per day.
I tried painting "on the side" of a full time office job. Despite my intentions, I rarely found the time and energy to paint, let alone research galleries, attend openings, apply for exhibitions and establish myself as an artist. So I quit my job. One month later, I had nine commissions and a group exhibition lined up in Toronto. It's now been two and a half years, and I've sold over 80 paintings to private and corporate collectors across Canada.

What do you have next up your sleeve?

Next week I have a solo show, called revitalizaT.On, opening at the Elaine Fleck Gallery in Toronto. It runs September 1-25. Each painting dissects an area of Toronto I feel needs a natural uplift. It's my first series of work created entirely without a paintbrush
Instead, I apply the paint with squeeze bottles and rotate the canvas to manipulate each drip. The result is calculated, yet spontaneous! Also, I'm flying to Rome next week to gather inspiration for my upcoming appearance at the International Art Fair in Toronto (Oct 28-31). I'll be back in Toronto in time for the opening reception of revitalizaT.On September 15th 6-9pm.

Where do you currently reside?/Best way to check out your work and get in touch with you?:
Im the proud new owner of a live/work studio near Queen Street and Carlaw Avenue in Toronto. But, right now, most of my works are on display at The Elaine Fleck Gallery and Gerry Thomas Gallery. You can view all of my works, and see their availability on my website (
www.amyshackleton.com).

Model abroad feature: Blythe in Shanghai!

O
Ottawa based model Blythe Cronyn has traveled the world modeling in major markets such as Toronto, Bangkok-Thailand and Tokyo-Japan! Now the young model finds herself on contract in another amazing market, Shanghai-China! Blythe, in her own words, shares with us, some information for both new models possibly coming to the market of Shanghai but also some little details that any traveler Shanghai bound may find useful!

1. Name :
Blythe Cronyn

2. Mother agency:
B&M Model Management, with A+ Modeling Agency in Shanghai (bnmmodels.com, aplus-model.com)

3. How long is your contract?:
My contract is 60 days; I arrived July 25th . Contracts range between 30 and 90 days, but I am limited by wanting to get back and finish my last year of Political Science at Ryerson this fall. If you want to make good money in this market, you are better off staying as long as the agency is willing to extend your contract. Clients here need time to get to know you, and will usually re-book a favoured model many times.

4. What could you tell us about Shanghai's market for new models/models whom have not yet been?: Shanghai is a great market for new models. You don’t need to have a stellar book, although it always helps, so girls with only a couple shoots in their books can do very well here. Clients will book models based on performance at castings more commonly than direct bookings through pictures, so if you have a good look for China, are friendly, and polite, you should do fine.

5. What is something interesting/different about the city?:
Chinese culture is down to earth; people are very family and friend oriented, and don’t generally care about what others think. At meal times you don’t have your own plate, you share everything in the middle of the table, with lots of yelling and reaching over everyone else. Chinese people are also comfortable with staring openly in public, and pushing or shoving to get where you need to go is acceptable as well. A lot of models don’t take the time to learn about the culture of the country they are visiting, and many of them consider the staring or pushing rude and a sign of an unintelligent.

6. What is the shopping like?:
Shopping in China is very fun! There are shopping malls similar to those found in Canada with most of the same designer names, but prices are pretty much on par to Canada as well. There are also many markets, which sell everything from jewellery to kitchen appliances to dogs to knock-off designer purses, to tattoo shops and manicure salons (I’d recommend avoiding these last two). You can bargain with the vendors but they will quickly jump on foreigners and inflate prices sometimes 20 times what an item is actually worth. If you are smart and firm in your bargaining, you can get great deals.

7. Any current fashion trends that stand out/ different that you have noticed?:
A lot of the Chinese girls dress in an almost Paris Hilton-esque style: sky-high heels, mini skirts, huge “designer” bags, oversize sunglasses, and a Swarovski crystal bedazzled iPhone. I do love that most girls here are always done up to the nines; no Uggs, sweatpants, or puffy vests in sight!

8.Makeup trends that you have noticed?:
Bright polish and flashy nails are huge, with lots of glitter and designs. Chinese girls also love fake lashes and lots of eyeliner. In Canada, models are instructed to wear absolute minimal makeup to castings. Here, since you are having your picture taken at every casting, most models will layer on camera-ready faces and re-apply many times throughout the day (after sweating it off over and over). I try and stick to a happy medium, with a great base of foundation and blush, maybe a touch of black liner close to the top lash line, natural lips, and tons of mascara. Tanned skin is very unpopular here so models are encouraged to stay out of the sun.

9. Favorite thing about shanghai?:
China is developing very quickly right now, and Shanghai is at the very hub of it all. Everywhere you go there are new skyscrapers going up at lightning speed. I really love the Bund, a stretch of Zhongshan Road along the Huangpu River that faces Pudong, the business district with most of the fancy hotels and skyscrapers as well as Shanghai TV Tower, a smaller, pink version of our CN tower. The Bund is a collection of dozens of historical colonial buildings that originally housed banks and trading houses from many European nations, all ornately decorated with lots of marble and statues. Now the Bund is full of top line designer shops, restaurants, and nightclubs.

10. Something you'd recommend to eat for somebody whose never been to Shanghai?:
I LOVE pan-fried pork dumplings! Chinese food here is different than “American” Chinese food at home, no egg rolls or chicken balls! Lots of steamed vegetables, noodles, rice, and many different kinds of meat. But since we are on the go all day every day, unfortunately a lot of my meals consist of whatever can be scavenged from the local convenience store.

11. Shanghai's currency?:
Chinese currency is the yuan, or RNB. Exchange rates are approximately 7RNB to 1CAD.
